Jeff00:05

Welcome back to our supply insiders. My name is Jeff Morrow. And today we're talking with Jennifer Corrington, who is the vice president of marketing and new product development for Sculpey. That's a big mouthful, Jennifer, how are you doing today?

Jennifer00:19

Sure

I'm great. Thanks for having me.

Jeff00:22

Well, it's our pleasure.

We're really excited to talk about this. So just for our listeners out there, what the heck is Sculpey

Jennifer00:31

so Sculpey is an oven bake, polymer, clay. So basically what that means is it's a clay that starts out soft and malleable, and you can make things like jewelry, home decor. Sculptures dolls, whatever you can kind of dream up and then you put it in your home oven.

So it bakes it a low temperature, 275 Fahrenheit for about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the thickness of the piece. And then once you take it out of the oven, it is hard and cured and will stay that way forever.

Jeff01:00

Now do you have to bake all of your clays?

Jennifer01:04

You have to bake the polymer clays. Now we do have a couple air dry clays or, and then a couple non dry clays, which is like a wax based formula.

And those you do not bake, but everything that says oven bake or polymer clay, you do in fact have to bake in an

Jeff01:21

oven,

okay. So Sculpey oven bake clay. I, I read someplace that this was a happy accident. How the heck did that happen?

Jennifer01:29

It really was now I wasn't here at the company one that happened, but it was, we've been around for about 55 years.

And they, one of our lab guys was working on making a kind of thermal conductor kind of little putty, and it didn't work out for that at all. So he kind of just set it aside and, you know, a couple months later he was kind of tinkering around and playing. And for some reason he just decided to make a snowman and then bake it when he did.

He discovered. Wow. Okay. It fuses together and it stays really hard. And then you can paint it. You could carve it, you could drill it. You could do all of these things to it afterwards and thus polymer clay. And so back way back then we only had. The color white. So we didn't have all the fabulous colors we have today, or the gliters, the metallic was very basic, but through the years, you know, as we started working with more artists and kind of seeing what people were doing, we then started introducing like a bunch of colors.

Jeff02:28

Wow. So I, I, I think there's a lot to talk about here. Yes. But as I understand it there are clays for all skill levels,

Jennifer02:37

right? Absolutely. So the way we kind of work is we go from the softest clays, like our bake shop clay, which is perfect for kids. And it comes in, you know, 14 basic colors. Then you've got original Sculpey and that's the clay that a lot of schools use.

It's a less expensive clay and it comes in white terracotta and granite. And you can obviously paint as like a secondary creative experience for kids after they create. And then we kind of step up to scope B three and scope B three is. Kind of like the workhorse clay. That's what a lot of people start with.

It's found everywhere from Walmart, Michael's Joans hobby lobby, and it comes in about 45 unique colors. We do have some gliters and they're very bright colors. So, you know, it's great for making jewelry or home decor. And then when you start getting. You know your skill level up and you've used it for a little bit, then you kind of graduate into Premo, which is the artist's number one, hands down, favorite clay.

And they love it because it's firmer than Sculpey three it's stronger and more flexible. So when you're making those delicate earring pieces or necklace pieces, or even larger pieces, it just has more durability to it. And then we recently about 10 years ago introduced Souffle clay, which is. A lightweight version of an, of the Premo play.

So you've got your Premo for artists, your Souffle for artists. And then if you're a sculptor. So if someone hardcore are making figurines dolls, things like that, that's the super Sculpey line. So it kind of just depends on your skill level and what you actually wanna make. And then we've got the perfect play for you.

Jeff04:15

Wow. So let's start at the beginning. Let's start at the, the, the very lowest level and. That's the kids, clay. Mm-hmm why is it so perfect for kids and what can kids do

Jennifer04:29

with it? Well, it's very soft. So for little hands they can manipulate it very easily. So when you start getting into the more professional clays, that's when they're gonna be a lot firmer, but since bake shop is.

Specifically made for kids. It's super soft and we've got like thousands of projects for kids on our website. They make things anywhere from like refrigerator magnets to key chains, to backpack kind of tags. They make games even so you can make really cute, like little fun tick, tick toe games. I mean, honestly, a anything you can dream

Jeff04:58

up well now and, and all of that needs to be baked

Jennifer05:02

also.

Yes. Every polymer clay brand, whether it be bake, shop Sculpey, three Primo souffle or super school bay has to be baked in your home oven. And it's at a low temperature of 275. So it's like lower than baking cookies. So it's, you know, we do say kids should be supervised when baking, obviously as you would, if you were making a cake or cookies with them, but it's a low temperature.

So it's easy to use even in your toaster oven. We have a lot of people that, you know, have toaster ovens to bake their clay.

Jeff05:33

Wow. So you said people could go to your website. Why don't we give them your website? What is your website address?

Jennifer05:40

Sure. It's sculpey.com, which is S C U L P E y.com.

Jeff05:46

And all you have videos on there.

You have ideas you have all

sorts of stuff.

Jennifer05:52

Oh, my gosh, we have so many things on there. Yes. So we've got a huge, robust how-to section and that's where you're gonna find projects for all skill levels and all types of things you wanna make, whether you wanna sculpt you wanna make jewelry home decor. The sky's the limit there.

And then we've also got a blog, so we've got a design squad and every month we have a different design squad member blogging about a wide variety of topics, anything from tips and tricks to how they got started to color inspiration. So a lot of different things. And then we've got all of our products online that we carry and there's videos for them.

There's just so much information. There's a clay comparison chart. So if you're really new and you're like, what do you know, where do I get started? We've got a whole section of like how to get started, you know, where it breaks down, like depending on what you wanna make and your skill level, what Clay's perfect for you.

So there's a ton of information on there

Jeff06:46

and, and I assume you're on social media also.

Jennifer06:49

Yes, we are we do a lot of content. I mean, content is king here. Sculpey so we do tons of like 60 second project inspiration videos. And we make sure that we cover, you know, a wide variety of our brands. So it's not just one brand.

We try to hit on a bunch of different brands and then a bunch of different trends. So depending on which trending. we're gonna give you a really cool project to do with our clay. So we spend a lot of time on that.

Jeff07:16

So it's on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok,

Pinterest.

Jennifer07:20

Yeah. All of the YouTube. Yep. We've got YouTube, YouTube.

Yep. All over the boat, all over the place.

Jeff07:25

So after we go with the, with the Sculpey for kids, mm-hmm what is the next level?

Jennifer07:31

then you're gonna do Sculpey three and that's, you know, a little bit firmer than the, when the kids, clay and it comes in about 45 different colors. And the cool thing about this is we also have multipacks of clay.

So if you're new to clay and you're not sure what colors might be good for you or what you need, we have multipacks you just grab a multipack. It's gonna give you a bunch of different colors. You can try a bunch without committing to the two ounce bars.

Jeff07:57

Gotcha. And the types of things that you can do with Sculpey three are,

Jennifer08:02

Yep. So a lot of like home decor, little decorative pieces, like a lot of people like to make some, a popular thing that people make are like marbled, ring dishes. Hm. So it's like a super thing that a lot of people start out with where they just marble some colors together, you form it over a bowl and you've got this cute little dish and they make really sweet gifts.

And then if you wanna try your hand at some introductory sculpting, sometimes people make little hearts or something to put in the middle of it. So that's a really quick and easy project that a lot of people start with. But with Sculpey three, you're not gonna wanna make anything. Too thin because it's not as strong as like a Premo or a souffle

and that's where you're gonna get your thinner earrings and your thinner pieces that are gonna have that durability.

Jeff08:43

Okay. And then after Sculpey three is.

Jennifer08:47

Premo and souffle so again, depending on, you know, what your preferences are, so souffle is a lighter weight than Premo, but it also has a suede, like finish on it.

So like Premo is more matte. This is souffle is more suede like, so it's got a different look to it. Some people love that and what's really cool about souffle. Is, we actually have a video right now on our website, where we're we teach you how to actually make cord from souffle. So, because it's so flexible and so strong, you can customize the cords for your necklaces, or even like wrap bracelets out of souffle.

and so you can custom your colors and then make your other beads and things. So souffle is really loved by a lot of jewelry artists because of the lightweightness and the suede lake finish.

Jeff09:39

So it was souffle. And what was the other one? You said

Premo PREMOs, our most popular artist clay by far.

How, how does that differ from so.

Jennifer09:48

It's a little heavier and it's got a matte finish, so it doesn't have that suede, like finish. And then in Premo, because of the formulation, you can ma we can make gliters and metallic colors. Translucence things we can't do in souffle. So souffle You can do solid colors and we have a more trend based palette where in Premo, that's where you're gonna find your glitter clays, your metallic clays, your translucent, your granite.

So a lot of really cool finishes, but the really neat part. And we just came out with this multipak last year was you can mix Premo and souffle together. So let's say you love the suede like finish of souffle, but Ooh, I wish I could have a metallic sheen. No problem. Take your favorite souffle color mix. One of your favorite metallic PREMOs.

And then you're gonna get this awesome metallic souffle color. So there's just so much versatility and flexibility. That that is why a lot of artists love the Premo and souffle. And that's why we did a multipack so that you can get 'em together, mix and match. Try out your favorite combinations.

Jeff10:55

So when you say mix the clays, what, what does that mean?

Do you put it in a bowl with a spoon or what do

Jennifer11:00

you do? no. No. So you you'd cut off a little piece of, you know, your Premo and cut off a little piece of your souffle and you always start no matter what clay you're starting with, you knead it. So by kneading it, what you're doing is you're taking it and putting it between your fingers and kind of.

Smooshing it and squishing it and getting it really malleable. So once you've done that to both different colors, then you're gonna mix 'em together. And a lot of times to make that process faster, people have pasta machines. Exactly. Like they like use with regular pasta. Atlas is a very popular brand, not only for pasta, but also for clay

. Because it's very durable. It's just a great brand. And so you can get a motor, if you are doing a lot of work, like what we have in our design studio is we have a pasta machine with a motor, and then you're just gonna run that through the pasta machine until all the colors kind of incorporate and mix up.

And you get your new color a

Jeff11:59

little bit before we talked about marbling. When you marble, is it the same sort of process

Jennifer12:05

kind of, yes, but you're not going as far. So when you're marbling. The easiest, fastest, most fun way to marble is to make little snakes of like three colors. So you're just gonna make like a little log or a little snake of three different colors, and then you're gonna twist and then fold and then twist and then fold and then make a ball and then flatten.

And that that's marbled. So it's, it's kind of color mixing, but it's not taking into the next level of when you're actually incorporating the colors to make a new color. So marbling is just kind of a quicker. Less thorough way of doing it, cuz you don't want a new color when you marble you just want, you know, a fun pattern of some swirled colors.

Jeff12:42

What are the new things that people are doing with Sculpey these days? Are there any fun things or different things that they're doing out there?

Jennifer12:49

Yeah. So something that kind of popped up last year and it's still going strong today. And it's really interesting to see what people are doing is they're making slabs.

So what this is is you would roll out one color of clay. And then you're going to do a bunch of different things on top of that slab. So something that is very popular is make floral slab. So that's where you're gonna manipulate and make like little floral scenes on your slab. And it's really cool and people get really detailed and then they take, you know, different tools and kind of add some different accents.

And then. And then your slab is just all kind of crazy and fun, and then you can cut out different earring pieces or necklace pieces. And that's something that a lot of people are doing lately. And it's, it's really fun to see what people are coming up with. Another popular technique is called terrazo and what this is is you're gonna take a couple different colors.

and you're gonna chop them up and then kind of mix 'em together and then roll out. And you're gonna have this really cool sheet of a bunch of different kind of speckled colors. And they're all different sizes and shapes, cuz really you're just, you know, chopping. So it could, you know, you're not being precise, you're just roughly chopping and that's a really cool look as well.

So those are a couple of the top two things that techniques that people are doing now,

Jeff14:09

can you put Sculpey into some of these intricate molds that they have out there?

Jennifer14:14

oh, yeah. For sure you can use sculpey with any type of mold, because like for, so for example, oven baked, silicone molds are the best because those go right in your oven.

However, if you don't have oven baked, safe molds that's okay. Because once the clay goes in, you can kind of gently like loosen the edges and pull it out. Hmm. But speaking of molds, I do. Tell you about one product that we recently introduced that works awesome in molds and that's liquid Sculpey. Oh, so liquid Sculpey is kind of what it sounds like liquid polymer, clay

So what's really cool about this is not only can you use it in the molds? It's so it starts out as a liquid and then bakes to lightweight pieces. So it's perfect for like earrings or different jewelry applications. But another cool thing you could do with it is make window clings. So let's say you had this really cool.

Like drawing that you wanted to trace, you would just put it under a piece of glass. So just take it out of a picture frame, put the glass down. You would just trace the outline, you know, with one color, bake it and then take it out and then add your other colors. And because you baked like the outline, then your other colors are just gonna stay in the lines and you could have really beautiful window cl.

So that's another fun thing.

Jeff15:35

It sounds almost like a stain glass window

Jennifer15:38

type thing. Kinda. Yeah. Mm-hmm yeah, it's really cool. And like, you can write with it. So, you know, we've got projects like to make mirror clings. Like if you wanted to have like little affirmations or something on your mirror every morning, you can make those and pin 'em up you know, just stick 'em on.

And because you're baking on glass, it's gonna stick to mirrors and it's gonna stick to windows after, after it's done baking. So there's no other like adhesive you have to use or anything like that

Jeff16:03

is the liquid Sculpey opaque or translucent.

Jennifer16:07

It actually several different varieties. So we've got some translucent, we've got a clear, which is awesome.

It's very clear. It's almost like resin, like we've got some translucent, so we've got like Amber translucent and turquoise translucent, but then we've got some metallics and that's where you get really gorgeous shimmery colors. So we've got like Navy. Emerald metallic amethyst, Pearl Garnet, metallic.

And then we've got even a glow in the dark version, which we just came out with this year. So I can't wait to see like really cool Halloween decorations made with those. I could totally wow. Picture like scary eyes and things like that. So yeah, so we've got a, and then we've got, you know, our matte finishes, so we've got like red, yellow, blue, black, white, And then we've got our normal metallics, like your silver, your gold.

So we, we kind of have a huge variety of colors because that's, you know, the most fun thing is, you know, picking out your favorite colors and kind of mixing 'em together. The same thing you can marble liquids together. So we've got. A lot of different how to videos on how to, you know, marble your liquids, do paint poor techniques with your liquids.

So a lot of things that you can do with paint you can do with this. So we've covered canvases with it. We've marbled it on picture frames. So it's just a really versatile product.

Jeff17:24

Well, let's say somebody puts something into a mold. and they fake it and they bring it out and it's it. A, it's a picture of an angel and they wanna, they wanna attach it to the side of a vase.

How do they actually stick it on there? Do you do it with super glued? Do you do it

Jennifer17:41

with. Yeah. So yeah, so the best glue to use is super glue. We use a couple different brands like E 6,000 is some, is a brand that we like and then lock tight is also a brand that works really well. And you would also use those for like if you're making earrings and you have a post, so not the fish hook, the dangly, but the post, you can also use super glue on those.

Jeff18:05

Let's say that you're making ear rings and you go and you bake it and you forgot to put a little hole in there. And can you take a drill and just with a real fine drill, can you drill a hole into

Jennifer18:17

Sculpey you sure can. Dremels are super popular for that. So a lot of our artists have dremels and then the key is though, if you're new to this, you're gonna wanna get like a little wooden block or something that you can drill into.

So you'd have your like little block, you'd put your earring on there and then you'd line up your dremel and then you'd drill through. And it's super easy. All of

Jeff18:41

these are oven bake. Talk to us a little bit about the air, dry clay. Why do we, why would people want to use air dry?

Jennifer18:48

You know we find that maybe schools that aren't allowed ovens in their room or if you're making some crazy big thing that couldn't fit in your oven, like we've had teachers make like volcanoes or just larger structures or sculptures that's when you'd wanna use your air dry.

The thing about air dry. Is that you can't get as fine of detail as you can with like a super sculpt if you're sculpting something. But with air dry, you can color it. Using like acrylic paints or oil paints, you can. Paint it after it dries. And usually it takes about 24 hours to dry and it also makes awesome like paw print impressions or baby hand impressions.

So if you didn't wanna use polymer clay, you didn't have polymer clay, our air dry has awesome impression qualities.

Jeff19:35

So if we wanted to paint on top of it, it's you using an acrylic paint? Can you use watercolor? What can't you use?

Jennifer19:42

I don't think there's a can't, it's kind of your preference. A lot of artists that we work with, like the acrylic acrylic paints the best.

In fact, we just had this awesome blog article published on our website by a polymer, excuse me, an air dry artist giving tons of tips and tricks and like what she does and. How she covers bases and wood and you know, all the different things. So that was really important for us to get an article written like that because we do get a lot of questions about air dry.

So we wanted to make sure people that were looking, you know, to create with air dry, had some resources as

Jeff20:16

well. So you could use an and air spray gun. You can, you can, you can do all of that kind of stuff. You could even like the, the buff and rub where you take the, you know, the little gold and hit the highlights.

Jennifer20:28

Mm. Yeah, for sure. For sure.

Jeff20:30

Yep. Tell me a little bit about storage. I'm assuming that you've got a store air, dry clay, different than you do the oven bake

Jennifer20:39

clay. You. Yeah. So air dry, you need to make sure you've got an airtight container because obviously any air that gets in is just gonna dry your clay.

So you don't want that. But with polymer clay, which is why a lot of people like it is it could literally sit out on your work surface. Forever. Wow. I mean, you'd wanna cover it because you don't want dust or, you know, debris or hair, whatever could get onto it. You don't want that. So we always recommend, you know, a lot of artists just kind of wrap it up.

Like if they only use half the bar, they just kind of wrap, you know, the other half up and put it in a box. But you there, it won't dry out. It stays soft and malleable until you bake it. And then once you bake it, Then it's cured and will, you know, is, is hard. And you, you can add to it though. So what a lot of sculptors do is let's say you're working on like a really intricate sculpt.

You might sculpt the main body bake it. And then you wanna attach like a cape whatever other elements that you wanna attach out of clay, you would make those bake again. So you can do multiple bakes. It's not like you have to create one thing and one sitting and then bake it. You can take months to create things.

It doesn't matter. So are you

Jeff21:52

saying, like if I created a and doing a, a sculpture of a bust of a head, so I put the basic head in without the ears, I put it in the oven. and I take it out and then I take the soft clay and I put it back. I put the two ears on it and put it back in the oven. Mm-hmm the thing that's already been baked.

It's not gonna hurt it again to bake it again. No, mm-hmm

Jennifer22:14

mm-hmm no, not at all. Well, and there are some baking tips. I don't know if you want me to talk about those but sure. Go ahead. You should always have an oven thermometer. That is really, really important because a lot of people don't understand. And to be honest, I didn't either until I started working here, that home ovens spike a lot.

And they're not really the temperature sometimes that you think they are. Even if it's a new oven. So we always say, use an oven thermometer and make sure that your oven really is the temperature you think it is. There's a lot of people that. Do a bunch of different things. Like some people tent their pieces.

So like you don't want it to be too close to the heating element because then it could brown it a little bit. So what people do is they make little tents out of paper, cause paper doesn't burn at 2 75 or aluminum foil is another. Good thing that if you want to, like, if you're worried about it or whatever you could do that that's not needed, but just, you know, you know, how different artists find different things that they like to do.

Yeah. So you could do that as well. So you could also bake on anything like we bake on index cards sometimes. If we don't, you know, have a pan, a handy, you could at a metal pan, a ceramic tile glass. So there's a bunch of different things. You can bake your creations on as.

Jeff23:29

Let's talk a little about, about the Sculpey tools you guys offer.

Sure. What, what is it that you offer? What should people be looking at

Jennifer23:36

and buying? We have a ton of tools. We've got, you know, we've got this awesome claim at, I was actually recently at a trade show. And we had our, we were doing a, make it, take it and we had our claim mat. So what they are is they are, they have silicone bottoms, so they don't skid and then you can create, create on it.

And then you. You could just pick it up and put it right in the oven and people are going crazy for these because they, they hadn't seen them before. So it's really fun. I find when I'm talking to someone new or I'm at a trade show and you know, people kind of learn about things and they get excited cuz they hadn't seen them before.

But we have a ton of tools that can add detail. They're great for sculpting or jewelry making. We've got kind of like little basic sets, like the clay tool starter set, and that comes with like a basic knife, a needle tool, and then a detail tool. But then we have, you know, an essential toolkit and that gives you way more.

So then that's, you've got your blade, your metal blade, your roller. So it just kind of depends on. What you're looking for and what you wanna do, but to be honest, as long as you hand, you know, your hands toothpicks, anything from ho you know, you could just kinda makeshift tools too. If you don't wanna have a huge investment, like you don't wanna spend, you know, a lot of money when you first start that's okay.

You know, we use toothpicks sometimes to make holes for, for your earrings. I did this really cool project where. There's this technique called maku Magana. And that's where you stack up different colors of clay, and then you take different tools and you kind of stab them into the stack. And then as you shave away, it kind of layers all the different color.

It's really cool. But you don't need, like, I used a screwdriver, a kitchen scissors a pencil, like just random. So it's kind of just being creative. And I think when you're an artist and you know, you just kind of intuitively try things, right? Like you'll just pick up something and be like, oh, what, what, what will this do?

And that's the fun part about clay. You could use everyday things as

Jeff25:34

well. What's the most asked question you get about Sculpey

is it safe to bake in my home oven? so, you know, we do classes for Michael's. So every other month we are featured on their zoom classes, so you can sign up on their website and we'll teach you how to do anything from.

You know, like last month we did a liquid Sculpey 1 0 1 in July, we're doing a really cool liquid Sculpey jewelry class. So it just kind depends. We're doing a home decor class in October. So, but in every class, cuz I, I moderate those classes we're asked, you know, is it safe to bake my home oven? It is a hundred percent.

Jennifer26:15

Yes.

Jeff26:15

And what would you say the biggest differences are between Sculpey and your

Jennifer26:20

competition? Quality? I mean, , you know, we have a very high quality product. Quality is very, very, very important to us. And so, you know, we do a lot of extensive testing. We're like our clay doesn't disintegrate in water. So if you know, our clay gets wet, you're good.

Just dab it off cuz you know, polymer, clay and water aren't best friends, but our clay doesn't disintegrate. So we just have a more high quality product. We're very innovative. So we're always kind of pushing the envelope and you know, coming up with, you know, really fun, interesting things to do with clay and then the products to kind of go along.

Jeff27:01

Well, I, I gotta tell you, it sounds like the sky's the limit when you're using Sculpey and our audience, they can go out and they can buy Sculpey at brick and mortars. They could probably buy it online. They can buy it at the big box stores. It it's. I got a feeling that Sculpey is probably just about

everywhere.

Jennifer27:21

Yeah. You know, we're at Michael's Joanne's hobby lobby. We've got some product in Walmart. We're on Amazon. And then our site sculpy.com and then we're also sold internationally though. So we partner with a ton of different distributors because we don't ship anywhere outside of the us USA on our website.

However, on our website is a huge list of distributors all over the world that buy our product and then sell in their local markets. So really Sculpey is found every.

Jeff27:52

So if you are in the Midwest mm-hmm and you don't have a lot of things around, they can go to your website and you've got a store locator, I guess, to be able to find Sculpey

Jennifer28:03

we don't have a store locator, but we do. So we ship to the us from our website. So you could order from cul.com. But we also have a link to different distributors that also buy our products. And then you can also go on, obviously everything's on Amazon, right? so if you could buy from Amazon as well but then internationally, that's where you're gonna wanna go.

And we have a whole link that shows you like in, you know, China, where you can find it in France. Spain, you know, so anywhere you are, we have a distributor.

Jeff28:34

Is there anything I've forgotten to ask you about

Jennifer28:36

Sculpey I do wanna mention something kind of cool that we do on our website. We come out with web exclusive products every month.

So like tomorrow we've got two new souffle colors launching. And so every month we do a special launch just for our website. You can only find it on Sculpey.com and we promote it on our social pages. And then if you sign up for a newsletter, You will get a newsletter about all of our fun products as well.

So that's just something fun that a lot of people look forward to because we really try to hit on trends and try to make them really special.

Jeff29:10

So again, if people want to go to your website, what is your website again?

Jennifer29:16

it's www.sculpy.com, which is S C U L P E y.com.

Jeff29:23

Jennifer, thank you so much for taking all of this time.

It, it, it, you gave our audience a tremendous amount to think about, and I think that you've inspired a lot of buddy artists.

Jennifer29:35

I hope so. Yeah. I mean, that's why, you know, we love what we do, you know, to bring creativity to people. And as

Jeff29:41

you continue to be more creative we would love to have you back on the show and share some more information with our, with, with everybody listening out there.

Jennifer29:49

Of course I'd love to come back anytime.
